“Our family has had the pleasure of being a part of the NCCE community for 5 years now. We originally sought out NCCE as a potential option as our small public charter school was being closed. At the time we had a shy 4th grader, who had thrived in her “small pond” school. Self proclaimed helicopter parents, we had difficulty finding what we considered the right fit for our sweet girl. We were enamored the second we set foot on the campus, as was she. Having no idea the school even existed, we were thankful to the friend who had mentioned it in passing. (As time has gone on, I’ve learned the majority of people we encounter have no clue our school here exists, or what it’s about.)
The garden, farm, large structure play and smiling faces of staff and teachers made NCCE feel like home from that very first day. There was no question where our son would start kindergarten, and having frequented the campus daily to pick up his big sister, he was ready! We were deeply appreciative of both our “big” and “little” intermingling on the same campus. Our family treasures the years that we, and so many others, got that privilege!
NCCE is so unique, not just to our area, but to what schools are in general. The intimate class size, the sense of community, the way the faculty and staff are truly family. It has created and fostered an environment where the kids feel safe, emboldened to create and just BE. As a parent, it’s exactly what I hoped for my children: a school family that embraces them for who they are and encourages them gently to become.
There isn’t much I would change (if possible) about NCCE. Other than cosmetic and infrastructure enhancements, which has vastly been improved upon in the last year. The effort that’s obviously been put in to create new and innovative ways of generating income is refreshing and inspiring. The “outside of the box” mentality is producing!
Currently, in the 2nd grade room, the two bunnies are an absolute highlight. We love the presence of animals in every nook and cranny of the campus. Miss T communicates so well, has such a calming energy with the kids. My son is slow to warm up to most, yet comes home speaking endearingly of what “you know what Miss T said?!”
We appreciate feeling seen, heard and supported as a family. The teachers and staff, literally all of them, have been such blessings to us.
